What is Carbon Canister?

Gasoline fuel is a type of fuel that is volatile due to its nature and can form steam very quickly. Hydrocarbons formed in gasoline vapor are very harmful to the environment. In addition, it is forbidden to release it into the environment according to certain gas emission criteria.

Gasoline vapors also accumulate in the tanks of gasoline vehicles. The part that allows this steam to be collected and sent to the combustion chamber is called a carbon canister. The carbon canister, located on the vehicle near the intake manifold, prevents the fuel vapor from escaping to the atmosphere by passing it through the carbon filter in it and ensures that it is transmitted to the combustion chamber according to the information coming from the vehicle's brain. The working system is as follows. According to the operating state of the engine, the vapor pressure accumulated in the tank increases and a signal is sent to the ECU. This signal usually starts to be sent when 0.3 bar pressure is established. If the temperature of the combustion chamber is above a certain value, the ECU receiving the signal sends a signal to the path in the intake manifold of the steam, allowing the valve to open. Thus, excess steam is burned in the combustion chamber. The carbon canister has one more use case. Fuel tanks are completely closed and insulated chambers. When fuel is consumed or the temperature drops, there is a decrease in fuel volume. With the decreasing volume, a vacuum is created in the tank and if no outside air inlet is provided, the tank begins to shrink inward and lose its use. In order to prevent this situation, a two-way valve is placed in the carbon canister. When the tank pressure drops below a certain value, the valve opens and the tank pressure is balanced. In cases where the carbon canister fails, there may be cases where the engine starts late or does not start at all when the starter is pressed. In addition, the vehicle may continue to run for a while when the properly running engine is stopped. In this case, the carbon canister must be replaced. The carbon canister, which cannot fulfill its task, allows the steam to be discharged with the exhaust. This means that the vehicle cannot pass the exhaust inspection. In such a situation, the carbon canister should be checked.
